2015-11-15 Carpal tunnel syndrome at Cleveland Clinic
For more than half a century, Cleveland Clinic has been a leader in improving the understanding and management of carpal tunnel syndrome. It was George S. Phalen, MD, a Cleveland Clinic surgeon, who brought needed attention to carpal tunnel syndrome in the 1960s. Dr. Phalen is the namesake of Phalen’s Maneuver which is routinely used to this day for carpal tunnel syndrome diagnosis. In one of his seminal articles, Dr. Phalen reported on the anatomical, epidemiological, histological, and clinical features of carpal tunnel syndrome (Phalen GS, J Bone Joint Surg Am 48 (2): 211-228, 1966). This article was recently highlighted by the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery as JBJS Classics: George Phalen, Master Craftsman. After 50 years, Dr. Phalen's article remains the best source of information on carpal tunnel syndrome. Our Hand Research Laboratory is proud to continue the strong tradition of carpal tunnel syndrome research at Cleveland Clinic.

2015-11-15 OORF Research Grant
Our HandLab has received a grant from the Cleveland Clinic Orthopaedic Operating Room of the Future (OORF) Program to explore alternative surgical procedures for carpal tunnel syndrome. The grant will allow us to collect pilot data on enzymatic degradation of the transverse carpal ligament in a cadaveric model.
2015-10-31 HWBI Symposium 2015 a success
The Hand and Wrist Biomechanics International (HWBI) held its 9th Symposium at Milano Congressi in Milan, Italy from June 16-17, 2015. The symposium was held in conjunction with the 20th Congress of Federation of European Societies for Surgery of the Hand (FESSH). The symposium program featured 56 presentations including keynotes, invited talks, and open paper submissions. Main topics covered at this year’s event included the wrist, carpal tunnel, finger mechanics, motor control, distal radial ulnar joint (DRUJ), distal radius, ligaments, tendons, and biomaterials. The 2015 symposium also featured the 2nd International Thumb Osteoarthritis Workshop. There was record attendance at this year’s event, with 102 participants including hand surgeons, hand therapists, and engineers from 16 countries. Dr. Zong-Ming Li’s video discussing Hand Biomechanics & Orthopaedic Translation has been published by the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) on its Hand-e, a peer-reviewed compendium of resources for hand care professionals. The video can be viewed by visiting Hand-e Curriculum.
2015-09-15 ASSH Presidential Address by Dr. Seitz
Our HandLab clinical member, William H. Seitz, Jr. MD, was the 69th President (2014-2015) of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH). On September 10, 2015 during the 70th Annual ASSH Meeting in Seattle, Dr. Seitz delivered the presidential address to over 2700 attendants -- "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow: Building Upon the Past and Present to Prepare for the Future". Dr. Seitz is the second Cleveland Clinic surgeon who was elected as the ASSH President since the society's inception in 1946. Dr. George S. Phalen (who discovered carpal tunnel syndrome) was the 16th ASSH President (1961-1962). Our HandLab is fortunate to benefit from Dr. Seitz's clinical support for our hand research program with particular focus on carpal tunnel syndrome.

2015-08-15 Hand Biomechanics & Orthopedic Translation
Dr. Zong-Ming Li was an invited speaker for the Grand Challenges in Upper Limb Biomechanics Symposium at the American Society of Biomechanics annual meeting in Columbus, Ohio, August 6, 2015. In his opinion, Dr. Li thinks that one of the challenges for biomechanics research is asking the right biomechanics questions for clinical translation.
2015-07-15 NIH R01 Grant
Our HandLab has received an NIH R01 grant. This is a five year (2015-2020) project for the investigation of biomechanics of the carpal tunnel and develop novel treatment strategies for carpal tunnel syndrome.
2015-07-15 The Power of Every One
Our finger motion research is featured in Cleveland Clinic's Centennial Campaign video. The campaign, titled "The Power of Every One" to signify the importance and impact of every gift, will culminate with the institution's 100th anniversary in 2021.

Dr. Zong-Ming Li has been appointed as a Standing Member of the NIH Study Section "Motor Function, Speech and Rehabilitation (MFSR)”, starting on July 1, 2015.
2015-06-30 Doctoral Defense
Congratulations to Joseph Gabra on successfully defending his dissertation titled "Biomechanics of the Carpal Arch". Joe completed his doctoral degree in the joint Cleveland State University and Cleveland Clinic's Applied Engineering program.

Dr. Zong-Ming Li has been appointed a co-chair of the Applied Biomedical Enginnering (ABE) Program which was jointly created by the Fenn College of Engineering at Cleveland State University and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland Clinic in 1998. ABE students are admitted in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at Cleveland State University and do their doctoral research at the Cleveland Clinic or Cleveland State University, supported by full graduate assistantships.

World-renowned scientist, Dr. Savio L-Y. Woo, visited our HandLab to discuss our research on the transverse carpal ligament. Dr. Woo is an authority in the field of tendons and ligaments, and has made significant contributions to improve patient outcomes after knee injuries. During his visit, Dr. Woo also shared his life long research experience with the Cleveland Clinic orthopedic and biomedical community with a seminar titled "Translational Research in Sports Medicine - My Story Over 5 Decades".
